Everyone stay calm. I repeat stay calm. Not all hope is lost. Just a bad trailer is all
Well, when news broke last night that the trailer for Shane Black’s upcoming reinterpretation of The Predator was dropping today, I almost felt like a kid on Christmas Eve. Turns out I was a naughty boy because this felt like a lump of coal in my stocking.
Shane man, what the hell? You know people are expecting big things from this, you were part of the original, Christ even helped write it and this is the trailer you put out? I’m so confused. I don’t know how on Earth he approved this thing. It shows us nothing, it’s just a bunch of quick edits and Jacob Tremblay playing with toys. I can’t believe how underwhelmed I was after watching this trailer, and it doesn’t really get any better on repeat views. The cast is stacked, and they didn’t really even give us a good idea of who or what we are dealing with. Boyd Holbrook looks like he will be able to hold his own in this role. You just need to give us something. 10-15 great seconds to sell general audiences on this movie. Even the whole feel of the movie felt nothing like it’s predecessors. Predator is suppose to be dark, scary and suspenseful. With a little bit of fun sprinkled in here and there. Even the Predator itself is barely shown, I know they are invisible, but I wanted one cool moment from them.
They reshot the last third of this movie, I understand that maybe there’s not a ton of fully completed footage ready yet, but you need to go all out here. You need a ton of buzz for this, early and keep the hits coming. That’s how this becomes a truly successful movie. This just isn’t a great start. I’ll watch anything with a Predator in it, but I’m not the person they are trying to sell this movie on. You need the general audience to want to go and check this thing out. I expected a ton more from the first trailer and I actually expected more from Shane Black himself.
I knew they would go down the road of hybrid’s, I just knew it. I’m kind of disappointed by this. You don’t need to reinvent the Predator, it’s perfect the way it is. We just want to see them hunt people down and kill them in awesome and grotesque ways. Is that so hard to ask?
