The highly anticipated trailer for Project Hail Mary is finally here — and it’s everything you’d expect from a big-budget adaptation of Andy Weir’s bestselling novel (yep, the same guy who wrote The Martian). This one stars Ryan Gosling as Ryland Grace — a kind of jokey, reluctant hero who wakes up alone in space with no memory and a mission: to save Earth from an interstellar extinction event.
But here’s the twist — it’s not just Earth that’s in trouble. The sun isn’t dying from age — it’s being consumed by an alien microorganism. Yeah, wild. Gosling’s Grace isn’t even an astronaut by training — he’s a scientist, a genius, and also kind of a goofball, and he’s been thrown into the biggest, most desperate mission in human history.
The tone of the trailer? It’s… interesting. It definitely leans more into the comedy than I expected. That’s not a total surprise considering the film is being directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the team behind Into the Spider-Verse and 21 Jump Street. These guys love their humor, and the book does have plenty of laugh-out-loud moments — but I’m still not entirely convinced they’ve nailed the tone yet. That said, the trailer is just a glimpse. I need to see more to fully judge.
Visually though? This movie is going to absolutely slap. It’s shot by Greig Fraser — the genius DP behind Dune and The Batman — so yeah, expect jaw-dropping space cinematography.
And let’s talk about the real star of the story: Rocky. If you’ve read the book, you already know. If you haven’t — prepare to fall in love. Rocky is an alien — basically a rock-spider creature — and easily one of the most memorable characters in recent sci-fi. His bond with Gosling’s character becomes the emotional and intellectual heart of the story. They’re both the last survivors of their respective crews, and even though Rocky doesn’t speak a word of English, the way they learn to communicate and work together is just… beautiful. If they screw that up, the movie won’t work. Period.
But based on the brief tease we get at the end of the trailer, I think they’re on the right track. Rocky looks exactly how I imagined him — a strange, spidery, oddly adorable alien that seems ready to steal every scene he’s in.
This project has so much going for it: a smart, emotionally rich story; a mega-talented cast; a visually gifted director of photography; and an all-star creative team. In the past decade or so, we’ve gotten big sci-fi epics like Gravity, Interstellar, The Martian, Ad Astra, and Prometheus. If Project Hail Mary sticks the landing, I genuinely think it belongs in that upper tier — maybe even above some of them.
Also, let’s be real: this trailer alone probably just sold a ton of copies of the book. And that’s a good thing — the story is worth it.
I can’t wait for this one. If they get Rocky and Ryland right? We’re looking at a new sci-fi classic.
