One of the most iconic and enduring horror franchises of all time is back — Scream 7 has officially dropped its first trailer, and there’s a lot to unpack. This one comes with as much behind-the-scenes drama as on-screen suspense.
The Scream saga has been through quite a journey. The first three films are horror royalty — clever, sharp, and packed with iconic kills. After a long break, Scream 4 successfully revived the franchise, and then another hiatus brought us Scream 5 and Scream 6. Those last two leaned harder into brutal, modern slashers with a younger cast — “the Core Four” — while mixing in returning legacy characters.
But after Scream 6, things took a messy turn. Melissa Barrera was fired from the franchise over political statements, and Jenna Ortega exited as well. With both Carpenter sisters gone — the emotional heart of the last two entries — Scream 7 faces an uphill battle to win back fans’ trust.
Now, enter the new trailer — and it’s a wild ride.
Back to Where It All Began
The trailer opens at a familiar location: Stu Macher’s house. Only this time, it’s been turned into a trendy Airbnb, and naturally, things go terribly wrong once Ghostface shows up. The difference here is clear — this movie is all about Sidney Prescott.
While the last two installments pushed Neve Campbell to the sidelines, Scream 7 puts her back at the center. She’s joined by her daughter, Tatum (a touching nod to her best friend from the original film), and Joel McHale as her cop husband — though it already looks like his death is spoiled right in the trailer.
There’s a major tease that Matthew Lillard could be returning — either as Stu Macher himself or in some twisted legacy form. The trailer even ends with his iconic line from the original: “This is gonna be fun.” Whether that’s genuine or just clever marketing misdirection remains to be seen.
One Killer, One Connection
Unlike Scream 6, which featured three Ghostfaces, this trailer suggests a return to basics — one killer, one motive, and a deeply personal connection to Sidney. It feels more intimate, more focused, and possibly more emotional.
If Stu Macher really is back, it could make for an incredible full-circle moment. But it’s also a risky move — the fanbase is already expecting it. If the reveal is too obvious, it could fall flat. The smarter play might be to use Stu as a red herring while introducing someone new to keep the mystery alive.
Final Thoughts
Despite the controversy surrounding its production, the Scream 7 trailer looks solid. Ghostface appears more ruthless than ever — continuing the darker, more violent streak from the recent films. The setting, the nostalgia, and the focus on Sidney all point to a film that wants to close the circle in a big way.
As a longtime fan, I’m cautiously optimistic. The original Scream remains one of my all-time favorite horror films, and there’s something exciting about seeing the franchise try to come full circle. Here’s hoping Scream 7 can deliver a few surprises and give Sidney Prescott the finale she deserves.
Ghostface returns in February — and I’ll be there, popcorn in hand.
