Trailer Review: R.I.P. — Damon & Affleck Reunite, But Netflix Might Bury Them

It feels like a big deal just happened: Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, two of the golden boys of 90s Hollywood, are starring in a new movie together next year. It’s called R.I.P., directed by Joe Carnahan, and it’s based on true events about potentially corrupt Miami cops who stumble onto more money than they know what to do with. The trailer teases a slick cat-and-mouse game — do they take the money, or do they play it straight?

On paper, this should be massive. Damon and Affleck together again, backed by a star-studded cast that includes Steven Yeun, Kyle Chandler, Scott Adkins, and Teyana Taylor. After Good Will Hunting, you might’ve thought these two would have a filmography full of collabs by now — ten movies deep. That hasn’t been the case. Which makes this reunion feel special.

But here’s the problem: R.I.P. is heading straight to Netflix… in the middle of January. And that says a lot. Twenty years ago, this exact movie would’ve been a summer blockbuster. Today, it’s getting shuffled into the streaming queue at the deadest release window of the year — the time when movies usually go to die.

That’s what makes this frustrating. How do you gather this much star power and not put it in theaters? Why isn’t Damon and Affleck facing off on the big screen a guaranteed draw anymore? It’s baffling. The trailer itself looks decent, and honestly, Damon and Affleck bouncing off each other is enough to sell me. Their last pairing, Air, proved how electric they can be together — and that one was a theatrical release.

Now, sure, maybe there’s a reason for the January/Netflix combo. Maybe the movie’s not that good. The signs point that way. Netflix churns out slop as often as they land a real hit, and January isn’t exactly a vote of confidence. But at the same time, Joe Carnahan does know his way around an ensemble cast. Smokin’ Aces might have been dumb fun, but it was my kind of dumb fun. If he can channel that same chaotic energy with this absurdly stacked lineup, R.I.P. might actually surprise.

Bottom line: I’m excited to see my boys back together, even if the release strategy feels like a waste. We don’t get many Damon/Affleck team-ups anymore, and it’s a shame one of them might be buried on streaming. Fingers crossed this isn’t just another mid-January casualty.
