Ohhhhh boy…..
Imagine trying to follow Guillermo Del Toro. Those are some truly hard shoes to fill, arguably one of the most visually gifted director working today, no wonder a lot of people disliked this trailer. Look, to begin with, people just wanted Ron Perlman to return and make a Hellboy 3, but the studio was thinking differently and wanted to take this franchise in a whole new direction. A shift tonally and having a new star could shake things up enough to peak the interest of the fans. In steps David Harbour, the star of Stranger Things. I will say this, he wasn’t the worst part about this trailer.
I mentioned the shift in tone, but honestly I couldn’t tell what kind of tone they are going for here. It seems more bloody and violent then it’s predecessors, while at the same time being light hearted and fun. They even played Billy Idol throughout the trailer. So right off the bat, fans seem confused on what to expect from the new Hellboy. I think it has a great cast, Ian McShane is a fan favourite and is always churning out wicked performances and the same can be said for Milla Jovovich, who appears to be playing the villain of the movie.
I don’t like writing off movies completely after seeing a trailer, especially the first. But this just overall came across as a utter mess. Neil Marshall who is the new director has a lot to live up too. I just wanted maybe a little more, and even some of the visual effects and certainly the way Hellboy looks really through me for a loop. But, what do I know right?
