We just got a five-minute sneak peek at James Gunn’s Superman, and I’ve got to say—I’m all in. It’s a wild mix of humor, heart, and that pure comic book energy that’s been missing from the big screen for a while.
The clip opens with Superman injured and calling on his dog, Krypto, for help—and anyone who’s ever had a dog is going to feel this. Instead of helping, Krypto jumps on him, bites him, and generally makes things worse. The twist? He’s a superpowered dog, so his “help” is actually hurting Superman even more. It’s hilarious and weirdly relatable—because yeah, dogs are loyal, but they’re also absolute chaos. The whole scene is the kind of goofy, sincere humor that James Gunn does so well.
From there, Krypto drags Clark back to the Fortress of Solitude, giving us our first look at Gunn’s take on the iconic location. It’s slick, icy, and loaded with awesome Kryptonian tech. We even hear the language being spoken—possibly by robots voiced by Bradley Cooper, who’s rumored to be playing Jor-El. (Still unconfirmed, but it sounds like him.)
The robots attempt to heal Superman using solar energy, but naturally, they go a little overboard. He starts recovering too fast, which looks painful and disorienting—likely because this is still a younger, more inexperienced version of the character. It’s a clever way to show that he’s still figuring himself out.
The sneak peek closes with some extended footage from the trailer we’ve already seen—more of Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor (he finally speaks!), glimpses of Hawkgirl and Green Lantern, and Superman going head-to-head with a massive kaiju in the middle of a city. The visuals are stunning. The music is epic. The whole thing just feels like it knows exactly what kind of movie it wants to be: a comic book movie that’s proud to be a comic book movie.
This isn’t trying to be the gritty realism of Snyder’s Superman or a straight-up homage to the Reeve era—it’s something new. Some people are going to be on board immediately, others might not be. But if this sneak peek is any indication, Superman is going to be a huge summer hit.
It’s dropping into a packed July slate, but I’d be shocked if this movie flops. James Gunn has a track record—he hasn’t missed yet with comic book films, and he’s a master of ensemble casts and giving even the weirdest characters their due. I’m genuinely excited to see his take on the Man of Steel.
Also: I would absolutely kill for Krypto.
