Final ‘Supergirl’ Trailer Is Just What DC Needed

The final trailer for Supergirl has officially dropped as tickets go on sale, and my first thought was simple: why wasn’t this the trailer they led with?

By far, this is the best piece of marketing we’ve seen for the movie. It showcases more action, gives us a better look at the overall tone, highlights more of Lobo, throws in some Krypto, and most importantly, it finally feels like it’s selling audiences on what this movie actually is.

That’s why I’m torn.

On one hand, maybe this was always the plan. Save the strongest trailer for last, build anticipation, and give audiences one final push before release. On the other hand, part of me wonders if the studio feels the movie needs a bigger marketing boost and decided now was the time to unload the heavy artillery.

Either way, it worked.

For the first time, I’ve seen people outside the core DC fanbase genuinely start talking about this movie. Even some of the YouTubers and commentators who have spent months dismissing Supergirl suddenly seem much more interested after this trailer. That’s important because fans were always going to show up. The real challenge is convincing skeptical viewers to buy a ticket opening weekend.

And honestly, I think this trailer does a much better job of that than anything we’ve seen before.

As for the movie itself, I’m still not entirely sure how it’s going to turn out. What I care about most isn’t the box office. I just want the movie to be good. I really enjoyed Superman, and I think it gave the DCU a positive start. Whether you loved that movie or hated it, it felt like the franchise finally had some forward momentum.

That’s why Supergirl is such an important film.

With Superman: Man of Tomorrow already filming and set photos revealing things like Lex’s practical-looking mech suit, DC clearly isn’t slowing down. The next chapter is already being built. Supergirl needs to carry the momentum forward. It doesn’t need to be a massive leap. Even moving the ball forward a couple of yards is a win. What it can’t afford to do is move backward.

The good news is that this trailer gives me confidence.

Millie Alcock continues to look like she’s going to steal the show. Every piece of footage we’ve seen suggests she was made for this role. She has the look, the attitude, and the screen presence that Supergirl needs.

Meanwhile, Jason Momoa looks like he’s having the time of his life playing Lobo, and that’s exactly what fans want to see. Every scene with him seems packed with energy.

As for the villain, I’m keeping my expectations realistic. Historically, a lot of first solo superhero films struggle when it comes to their villains. The hero is usually the focus, while the antagonist ends up serving the story rather than becoming memorable on their own. That’s happened across plenty of superhero franchises over the years.

Because of that, I think the success of this movie will ultimately depend on Millie Alcock’s Supergirl and Jason Momoa’s Lobo. If those two characters deliver, audiences will likely forgive a weaker villain.

I’m also hoping we get at least one great scene between Superman and Lobo. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if the film contains more Superman than we’ve been led to believe. Considering DC is trying to build a connected universe, that would be a smart move.

At the end of the day, none of the speculation really changes the main takeaway.

This is the strongest Supergirl trailer we’ve gotten.

Should they have led with it? Maybe.

Was saving it for the final marketing push the right move? Maybe.

But with the movie only a few weeks away, this is exactly the kind of trailer DC needed to release. It finally feels like people are talking about Supergirl because they’re excited to see it rather than debating whether it should exist.

And right now, that’s a pretty good place for the DCU to be.
