‘The New Gods’ Has Found Its Director!

Ava DuVernay is jumping from one mega studio to the next. Disney to Warner Brothers, she is being eyed to direct their New Gods comic book movie!

ava-duvernay-870x432.jpg

Remember back in 2014, when Ava came bursting onto the scene with the critically acclaimed Selma? She virtually came out of nowhere, and scored a whopping 98% on Rotten Tomatoes with that film, and everyone instantly fell in love with this woman. Nominated for best picture at the Oscars and even took home best song that year, the movie was a smash hit and so was Ava.

Now a few years later she’s back on the scene with her latest movie, A Wrinkle In Time. Now this wasn’t met with the same response as Selma, but it was a big, bold, blockbuster type of movie, with a budget of over 100 million dollars. Now it hasn’t performed as well at the box-office as Disney was hoping, but visually it is being praised, and the flaws of the movie are a weak story. Well none of this seems to matter to Warner Brothers, as they are bringing on another woman to direct one of their projects. This time around, it’s The New Gods!

I don’t know a whole lot about The New Gods, but I know they were created by the legendary Jack Kirby in the 1970’s. So yeah, one of the greatest to ever be involved in the comic book industry is responsible for these characters and this story, so you know it’s fantastic. The source material will be great to pluck from, and now we finally might be able to see Darkseid, because you know, they left him out of the Justice League movie. But that’s a whole other conversation that we don’t need to have. There will be a ton of new and interesting characters to cast, and I hope that Warner Bros. is taking this seriously, because they could have a potential home run if this is done correctly. I’m intrigued, I certainly don’t think we need this movie, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want one in my life. This is a property and project that will need to be taken care of in the right manner, and if it isn’t, the whole thing will just fall apart and WB will have yet another flop and failure on their hands.

Didn’t really see Ava’s career going in this direction, certainly not after Selma. But, with what I saw visually from A Wrinkle In Time, she could be the right person to tackle this movie. It needs to be visually different and needs to stand out from anything we have seen before, in terms of a comic book movie. It is unclear whether or not this will be apart of the DCEU. Make sense because by the time this movie comes out, there may not be a DCEU anymore.

Here’s what those bad boys look like!

Michael Bay In Talks To Direct Lobo

This is something I didn’t think I needed in my life, but something I totally need in my life.

DVihbxSV4AAcm--.jpg-large

People HATE Michael Bay movies. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t really love his work, but he’s made some pretty damn entraining movies in his life. Now, I go to his movies because they are a guilty pleasure. The last few Transformers have almost been unbearable to sit through in the theatres. Incoherent, and mass destruction everywhere, Michael Bay loves his explosions.

News broke today that Warner Brothers. is eyeing him to direct a Lobo movie. Well fans everywhere were losing their minds, and not in a good way. They don’t want to see him anywhere near a DC property and I guess there’s some merit to their complaints. He really hasn’t made a good movie in a long time, and the DCEU is already on thin ice as it is. Why bring in a guy to direct that most movie goers already despise and loath? Here’s the thing, Michael Bay is a ridiculous and bonkers director, and guess what? Lobo is a ridiculously crazy and bonkers character that this could actually be a match made in heaven. If there’s one person that could tap into Lobo, it could be Michael Bay. He knows how to make a big blockbuster, and if WB cracks down on him just a little bit, this could turn out okay. Another thing, this needs to be rated R. If this movie happens, Lobo is a rated R kind of guy. He swears, and kills and enjoys his pleasure. So again Michael Bay is perfect for the job.

This thing could also turn out to be one of the worst comic book movies ever made, but again this is just “in talks” so even if it happens we are looking at a 2021 release date, at the earliest. I’m all for it, because like I said, I go to every single Michael Bay movie, I loved Pain and Gain, and I’m not afraid to say it. This will most likely end up being a complete and utter disaster but I stand by my guilty pleasures and so should you. The biggest make or break for the movie, who they cast as the titled character. Maybe Mark Wahlberg? Probably not because Lobo is 6’4, so that wouldn’t exactly work out. Who on Earth could play Lobo?

Deadpool Moves Up, New Mutants Moves Down.

We were really close to getting an X-Men horror movie – thanks a lot Disney.

(FOX)

So news broke yesterday that FOX and soon to be Disney has decided to push up the release date of the UntitledDeadpool Sequel from June 1st to May 18th. A move that I find to be a little strange to be honest. First of all, June 1st is a great slot and weekend to be in. With the new release date of May 18th, it really will take away from Avengers: Infinity War box-office numbers. Yes, Infinity War will gross over a billion dollars worldwide, I have no doubt in my mind about that, but two weeks after it comes out, Disney wants it to go head-to-head with another one of their big properties? How does that make any sense? Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom comes out June 9th, I would imagine they would rather have Deadpool take away from that box-office than their own? I guess it’s all going to the same place, but at the same, it really is a weird move.

Just like pushing back X-Men: New Mutants 10 months. Now for me, I think the reason behind this is simple. With Disney purchasing FOX and all their properties with it, Deadpool and X-Men included, I think Disney Execs saw a rough cut of New Mutants and thought it was way “to dark” for their liking and decided maybe some reshoots were necessary. The movie was scheduled to be released in April of this year, and now we have to wait until February of 2019? I can’t recall the last time a big budget movie like this was pushed back this long. Which is a real shame because I really enjoyed what footage we had gotten so far with New Mutants, the tone was great and I wanted to see a super hero movie that had a horror element to it.

I also believe it is possible that both Deadpool and the New Mutants could be finding their way into the MCU, and that is why both of these things are happening. Marvel is looking past Infinity War and paving the way for their future films and universe. Perhaps they want all of these characters to be involved so reshoots for New Mutants would make sense, so they could incorporate them into the MCU. As for Deadpool maybe after being released on the heels of Infinity War, they have something planned where he pops up at the end or someone from the MCU appears in his movie.

Those are just my thoughts, overall I’m pretty bummed about this New Mutants news because I was really looking forward to it, and I don’t believe we will be getting the same movie as we would have if it were still being released in April. Hopefully I’m wrong, but it’s just too much of a delay for them not to be reshooting the majority of this film.

Avengers: Infinity War Trailer.

Holy Santa Claus shit. Christmas has come early folks! I’m sorry for cursing.

Comic book fans rejoice. Remember at the beginning of AmericanPie, when Jim is trying to watch the illegal porn? And it’s all fuzzy and distorted? That was every comic book fan watching the leaked Infinity War trailer from San Diego Comic-Con. For the last four months since that trailer wowed audiences at SDCC, simpletons like myself have been begging Marvel to release a trailer for the highly anticipated conclusion to the Avengers trilogy. Well it’s finally here, they finally listened to all of our complaints. The Infinity War trailer has arrived, and my god is it glorious. Put away those tube socks, because before you know it this will be in front of our very eyes in a theatre near you.

“Fun isn’t something one considers when balancing the universe. But this, this does put a smile on my face” – Thanos.

So that was pretty amazing right? It only took Marvel 4 months to finally drop a trailer for Infinity War, and they did not disappoint. So many questions to consider after watching it. Let’s just get it out of the way. I’ve been waiting almost ten years to see Thanos and it lived up to the hype and build up. I really don’t see anyone beating that guy. He’s menacing, he’s pissed off and most improbably he seems to give zero you know whats. They certainly packed this trailer full, considering it is only 2 mins and 24 seconds. We get to see all of our heroes, some more than others, but remember the movie doesn’t come out for another six months….WHY GOD WHY!?

Thanos is on a mission to collect all the infinity stones it looks like and he doesn’t care who or what gets in his way. No armoured Spider-Man. Not the Hulk, Iron Man or whoever else the Avengers can throw at him. Sorry Vision your time looks to be up, Loki is doing Loki things and handing over a stone to the Mad Titan himself. There appears to be an all out war going on in Wakanda. My guess is that’s where the final infinity stone will be located so they will stop at nothing to protect it. Captain America has an incredible beard, so you know that means this movie will get serious. Thor looks like he has made some new friends, meeting up with the Guardians, not by choice I’d imagine.

Again it looks like Tony Stark will be the focale point in the movie and it almost looks like he’s given up the Iron Man persona, but that is just me speculating. Maybe he semi-retires after the events of Civil War. I just can’t get over how incredible Thanos sounds and looks, kudos to you Josh Brolin. He even looks like you!

I can’t wait 6 months for this movie to come out, I will watch this trailer about 100 times today. Infinity War is shaping up to be everything the MCU has promised it would be for the last decade. Really well done Russo Brothers.

Bow Down To Black Panther

Anyone else getting a Lion King vibe.

(MARVEL)

Well this certainly cured the Monday blues. Sunday scaries were hitting pretty hard last night and this was a nice little treat to wake up too. Black Panther is ultra badass and this entire trailer is truly something unique and something we really haven’t seen from a Marvel movie before. Is the Rocky universe part of the Marvel universe? Because that would be a crossover I would love to see. Ryan Coogler the director is really putting his stamp on this movie, and making it his own. It’s very urban looking, insanely colourful, and just all around world building.

Tons of action is going on throughout the trailer, but very little about the actual story line is known up to this point. I pointed out that this trailer feels very “world-building” where we are not in a modern city like most Marvel movies or in space for the GOTG and Thor franchises. We are seeing things we have yet to uncover and discover in this trailer and everything just looks spectacular. We have gotten a slew of trailers lately and I think this is really close to being my favourite one. It’s right there with The Last Jedi trailer.

The cast is just fantastic but I can’t stress enough how excited I am to see Michael B Jordan tackle the role of a villain. He’s one of my favourite actors working today, and I’m really excited to see his take on this character. Seriously this is one of the best all around casts in a comic book movie that I can remember, there are so many talented people working on this movie, it really is something special. I’m not really sure what’s going on with the suits, but it looks pretty awesome, I’m excited to get to learn more about Black Panther and where he comes from.

Ryan Coogler cares deeply about all of his projects and the fact he also is getting a writing credit for Black Panther speaks volumes. I know there is going to be a ton of passion and heart behind the camera and in the script, so that’s why I have tremendous faith in this movie. He’s coming off Creed which was one of my favourite movies of that year, so he’s got a great track record. There’s just too much to love about the entire project for me not to realize that Marvel has another home run on their hands. Look for this one to break the mould on the cookie cutter formula we are all so accustomed too when it comes to these Marvel movies, I think this one is going to be special.

‘Pacific Rim 2: Uprising’ Trailer

2pac will make anything better, especially when it involves big robots kicking the crap out of giant monsters.

(LEGENDARY)

Boy oh boy! What a trailer, seriously that song was straight fire. Pacific Rim 2 finally dropped a trailer and it didn’t disappoint. Being such a huge fan of the first one that came out way back in 2013 I couldn’t believe what I was watching on the screen in the theatre. It was so well done and pretty beautiful to watch.

Most of the cast is absent from the original and now John Boyega and Scott Eastwood are filling in, and John Boyega just keeps impressing me and he looks awesome in this. Director Guillermo del Toro left also but TV director Steven S. DeKnight is stepping in and looks like he isn’t skipping a beat. Charlie Day is also back, with what appears to be a larger role, can we please have him get into a Jäger in this, that would be must watch entertainment.

It looks like more of the same from its predecessor and that is not a bad thing. Look, it’s giant robots fighting big ass monsters what more do you really want. Yeah, the plot will probably be absurd and won’t make sense. But if you go into a Pacifc Rim movie looking for a great plot, you need to give your head a shake. It looks stunning and this is just the trailer, the final touches haven’t even been put on the movie yet. The visuals are just fantastic, when something is that large in scale, and you can make it seem so flawless and seamless, a ton of credit needs to be given to the effects team. Looks like we also have some Jaeger on Jaeger crime here, with the giant robots not only fighting the Kaiju but themselves as well. I like this premise and that will be pretty pretty pretty good to see.

‘Annihilation’ Looks Creepy

Love me some Natalie Portman.

(PARAMOUNT)

So the guy who did Ex Machina (Alex Garland), that movie was phenomenal is back with his newest project Annihilation. Remember how good Ex Machina was? So to say I’m pretty intrigued by his new movie, is an understatement. This trailer is creepy and really mysterious, where I’m not quite sure what is going on to be honest.

It seems that people are some scientific expedition and everything isn’t quite normal. At least the laws of nature are off, and this appears to be a dangerous mission of sorts. With Ex Machina being different and kind of a statement piece and a true piece of art. I’m sure this will follow suit on that regard.

Natalie Portman looks to be playing a biologists on this expedition and is in search of her husband, who is played by Oscar Issac. This has a really strong female cast, with Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tessa Thompson and Gina Rodriguez rounding out the ensemble. It’s really hard to get a grasp of what the movie is actually going to be about, it looks like things don’t go as planned and Natalie Portman’s character is replaying the events of the mission. There are plenty of awesome visuals throughout the trailer, and I think that’s why I’m so intrigued by it, really doesn’t look like anything we have seen in awhile and I’m fully on board for that. The visuals are really unique and the cinematography is so colourful and beautiful, it sucked me right in. It’s based on a best-selling book, so this movie will already have a following, and really I’ll watch anything Natalie Portman is in.

Tomb Raider Is Back

A video game movie, based on another video game. Probably not going to work.

(WARNER BROS.)

Film studios never learn. They just keep making movies based off video games and they just keep striking out. Have to give them some sort of credit I guess, there’s no lack of trying on their end. So here we go again, Tomb Raider is back, and I haven’t even seen the originals, so to say I care about this in the slightest is well spot on. I didn’t even play the video games growing up, but everyone knows this franchise, because well Laura Croft is a smoke.

I’m getting a real Uncharted meets Cast away vibe here. Which in reality sounds like an amazing movie, but we will see how they do on the execution part. I’m not going to go over any plot details from the trailer, because just give it a watch yourself and you’ll find out!

They didn’t disappoint either in the reboot because Oscar winner, yeah you read that correctly, Alicia Vikander (🚀🚀🚀) is playing the title role for this upcoming movie. Okay, so I know they are extremely similar but this looks like Uncharted to me, and if you are unfamiliar with that video game franchise just look it up. I know Tomb Raider is way before Uncharted was a thing, but I’m talking the style and the tone of the movie, match it perfectly. I’ll say this, I didn’t hate the trailer, in fact this doesn’t look half bad. That has to come with a grain of salt considering this movie is based off a video game and we all know how these things usually turn out. Besides Alicia we have a pretty stellar cast, Walton Goggins looks to be playing the villain a role very well suited for him, because he makes playing an asshole look pretty damn easy. We also have Dominic West (McNulty from The Wire) who is just fanatastic, and if we get him drinking Jameson and singing Irish folk tunes, I’m all in.

This has the potential to be a half decent movie, with a great cast and some pretty good looking action set pieces and effects. It’s just hard to get excited for something that has such a terrible track record. Only time will tell I guess, but I’ll give this trailer some credit, it really looks like they are trying harder.

Eh JJ, He’s Back for Star Wars: Episode IX

JJ Abrams is back in the directors chair, and I frankly do not care. Have you tried watching The Force Awakens again? It’s not very good.

So here’s the thing, this is nothing personal against JJ Abrams, I happen to like a lot of his movies, but overall The Force Awakens just wasn’t that great. The word “meh” can best describe that movie going experience. Yeah, I’m happy Star Wars is back in our lives, but at the same time, I’ve come to the realization that Star Wars is vastly overrated. Seriously take the Light Sabre out of it, and what is it exactly?. They make it cool, because let’s be honest here they are one of the coolest things ever invented in the film industry. So I’ll give it that and also Darth Vader, that guy is pretty, pretty, pretty neat.

I’m just not sold on this news, because I think they should have gotten someone different, with a different style to end the trilogy. We have the up coming Episode IIX which I guess I’m a little bit excited for, they haven’t shown to much, but Rian Johnson is behind the project and that guy made Looper, so I’ll watch anything he does.

I can’t figure out why I’m not pumped about Star Wars, maybe it’s the fatigue of all these franchises, or the fact that after the first viewing of The Force Awakens, I couldn’t get through it a second time. So I’m a little bit skeptical about this. Also Rogue One just wasn’t great, besides the wicked 30 seconds we got with Vader at the end. I don’t know, I don’t know why Disney went back to the same drinking well to end this trilogy, maybe they know JJ is a yes man and will make the movie they want. That’s probably it, only time will tell I guess.

What’s Going On With The DCEU?

I really have no idea what is going on with Warner Brothers and the DCEU anymore, makes me sad.

batfleckjpg-2e430d_1280w.jpg
(WARNER BROS.)

Seriously? What in the bloody hell is going on over at Warner Brothers? Just when you think they finally got it figured out, especially after the recent success of Wonder Woman. Which is now the highest-grossing movie of the summer. The last 24 hours have been kind of a cluster. First, we get word of a stand-alone Joker movie, that will not only not take place within the DCEU, but it turns out will cast a new lead??? Now we get word about The Batman, not being part of the DCEU either. Matt Reeves wants to make it his own thing, and tell his own story.

Honestly, have they learned nothing from Marvel? Do they not realize with the success of Wonder Woman, that this universe was finally heading in the right direction. Yes, I understand Justice League is going through MASSIVE reshoots, but I still have very high hopes for that movie. Why are they letting this news come out before it gets released? Ride this Wonder Woman wave all the way up to the release of Justice League. Why are you making the fans doubt the stability of the DCEU at this point in time? We do not need a Joker stand-alone movie, even if the legendary Martin Scorsese is on board to be a producer. I’m sorry it’s just not something that needs to happen right now. Todd Phillips (the guy behind The Hangover movies) is apparently directing, and he is certainly hit or miss. Like focus on what’s in front of you right now WB, and that’s getting Justice League out, without the entire world hating it. How about making two good movies in a row, before announcing about 15 upcoming projects, that quite frankly WE DON’T NEED. Jared Leto was a fine Joker, but we really don’t need another Joker cast. This is entering Spider-Man territory.

As for Matt Reeves and his standalone Batman movie. Having that be separate from the DCEU is actually kind of fine by me. What that probably means is, it will take place before the events of BvS, we will still get Affleck in the role, and that way, they feel ZERO pressure to add in any of the other Justice League members. Just let him tell a great Batman story, without having to worry about connecting it to all the other movies that are in the works over at WB for the DCEU. As long as Ben Affleck is still Batman, in these upcoming standalone Batman movies, I’m totally on board for whatever they want to do. In fact, I think it’s best if it’s completely different from the DCEU, maybe that’s just what this character needs.

Get your act together Warner Bros.
