Masters of the Universe Trailer Reaction — Could This Be This Year’s Dungeons & Dragons?

The new Masters of the Universe trailer dropped today, and honestly, this looks like one of the more interesting wildcards of the summer. Directed by Travis Knight — who previously delivered Bumblebee and Kubo and the Two Strings — there’s at least some real reason for optimism here. Both of those films had heart, strong visuals, and a clear creative voice, so this might not just be another empty nostalgia grab.

That said, the big question is: who exactly is this movie for?

He-Man is a massive property from the ’80s, but younger audiences might not have much familiarity with it. Meanwhile, the people who grew up with it are older now and may not rush out to theaters the way studios hope. That creates an interesting box office challenge for what’s reportedly a $150–200 million summer blockbuster.

One thing the movie absolutely has going for it is the cast. It’s stacked. Idris Elba, Morena Baccarin, Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man, Alison Brie, Camila Mendes, Kristen Wiig — and Jared Leto as Skeletor. That’s a massive lineup, and it definitely gives the movie some extra appeal.

Speaking of Jared Leto, it looks like the marketing might be intentionally keeping him in the background. After Tron: Ares struggled and with Leto becoming a bit of box office risk, it makes sense that the trailers aren’t putting his face front and center. Since he’s playing Skeletor, they can easily lean into the character design and voice performance without emphasizing the actor. It’s a smart move, especially for a big-budget summer release.

The second trailer itself is definitely stronger than the first. There’s more action, a better sense of scale, and a clearer tone. The movie looks like it’s leaning into a slightly campy, fun fantasy adventure — which might be exactly what it needs.

In fact, the vibe feels very similar to Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. That movie came in with some skepticism, leaned into the fun, and ended up being a really enjoyable theater experience. Masters of the Universe could follow a similar path: a big ’80s property, a large ensemble cast, and a tone that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

The action looks solid overall, and the world-building seems ambitious. The only potential concern is the apparent mix between the real world and the He-Man universe, with the character seemingly displaced on Earth. That could work narratively, but it’s always a tricky balance in fantasy adaptations.

Still, the overall vibe here is promising. The trailer sells a fun, slightly campy summer blockbuster with a strong cast and a director who has delivered before. If it sticks the landing, this could absolutely be this year’s Dungeons & Dragons — and that wouldn’t be a bad thing at all.
