The new Tron: Ares trailer just dropped, and wow — it’s been years since Tron: Legacy, a movie that underperformed at the box office but has since grown into something of a cult classic. Visually stunning, scored by Daft Punk, and anchored by a solid cast including Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund, and Olivia Wilde — I remember walking out of that movie stunned. And yet… a sequel just never happened.
Legacy was directed by Joseph Kosinski — the same guy who went on to give us Top Gun: Maverick — so yeah, in hindsight, Tron: Legacy really holds up. Now, over a decade later, we’re finally getting a sequel, and if this first look is anything to go by, Tron: Ares is about to melt our eyeballs and eardrums.
Visually, this thing is eye candy, exactly what you expect from a Tron film. The fusion of the digital world with the real one? That’s a bold move, and from the glimpses we got — light cycles tearing through cityscapes, floating ships, slick neon designs — it looks cool. And let’s talk sound: Nine Inch Nails is stepping in for Daft Punk, and Trent Reznor knows how to craft a mood. The score in this trailer is moody, epic, and industrial — this movie is going to feel like a rock concert in IMAX.
We hear Jeff Bridges’ voice in the trailer (always a win), and the cast includes Greta Lee, which is exciting. My one big gripe? Jared Leto. I’m just not sold on him as a lead. He’s never really proven to be a box office draw, and frankly, I miss Garrett Hedlund. He brought something grounded and real to Legacy, and his chemistry with Bridges was part of what made that film strong. Maybe he’ll show up in a surprise cameo — fingers crossed.
At just a minute and a half, this teaser did its job: it looks great, it sounds great, and it’s got people talking. Whether or not the story sticks the landing remains to be seen, but one thing’s for sure — this thing is going to absolutely go hard in IMAX.
